Fairness, Opportunity, and the Future of Court Sports
OparkInc developed two related websites: MyClubLives (MCL), a reservation system, and MyCommunityLives (MCTL), a community events system.
This blog explains the idea behind both products: organizations should be member-focused, not only court-focused.
What business is a club, park district, or sports organization really in?
Many would answer that they provide courts. Others would say they provide reservations, events, leagues, clinics, and programs. But the most successful organizations understand something different.
They are in the business of creating opportunities.
MCL applies that idea to reservations. MCTL applies that idea to events, programs, and community participation.
Players do not join because a club owns courts. They join because they believe those courts will provide opportunities to play, improve, compete, and connect with others.
The organizations that understand this distinction are the organizations most likely to retain members and continue growing.
Occupancy Can Hide Frustration
Many organizations measure success by occupancy. If courts are full, the assumption is that things are working.
But occupancy and member satisfaction are not the same thing.
Occupancy tells us how many reservations were fulfilled. It does not tell us how many requests went unfulfilled, how many members gave up trying, or how many concluded that membership was no longer worth the cost.
When demand exceeds supply, occupancy becomes a poor indicator of member experience. The metric that matters is opportunity.
Fairness Becomes Culture
Traditional reservation systems reward speed. The fastest finger wins. The earliest login wins. The member who understands the system best wins.
Over time, the same members capture the most desirable opportunities. Other members begin to feel excluded.
Not because courts are unavailable, but because access feels unfair.
Fairness becomes part of club culture. And club culture becomes part of retention.
The Networked Future
Most organizations manage only the courts they own. But members care about access.
The future belongs to networked organizations: private clubs, public parks, virtual clubs, community groups, schools, and private facilities connected through a common participation network.
Unused courts can become opportunities. Underutilized programs can become community resources. Members can gain access to a larger ecosystem.
What Comes Next
Younger pickleball players, junior players, families, and young professionals may create new demand patterns. More singles-oriented experiences may increase pressure on available capacity because two players may occupy a court instead of four.
Organizations that plan for this future will be better prepared for reservations, programming, and member satisfaction.
People do not join because courts exist. People join because opportunities exist.

Members understand scarcity. What they struggle with is inconsistency.
When opportunities appear to favor the fastest click, the earliest arrival, or the same familiar faces, confidence begins to erode.
Fair Play replaces uncertainty with confidence and trust.
Every member knows and can participate in the process. Every member has a fair opportunity.
